Land of gorges, caves and green valleys

From ancient times the ridges of the mighty Gissar mountain range in the outlying districts in the east of Turkmenistan are known as Kugitang or Koytendag. This is a wonderful region of deep canyons, caves, crystal springs and green valleys. Its natural monuments and attractions and sacral sites arouse keen interest among many travellers. One can see there the fossilized footprints of dinosaurs on the mountainous plateau near Hojapil settlement, the Umbar dere waterfall of unique beauty, the magnificent Kyrkgyz Grotto covered by legends, an enchanting grove of relict jujube trees, the deep canyon Daray Dere, mysterious caves and chasms of the western slope of the Koytendag Mountains. Gorges with springs and mountain rivers, which are few there, can be viewed as a natural phenomenon. Such picturesque gorges are Tutly dere and Daray dere.
