IV International Book Fair in the Turkmen capital


The IV International Book Fair and the Book is the Path to Cooperation and Progress Conference were held at the Exhibition Palace in Ashgabat. The large-scale forum was organized by the Turkmen State Publishing Service and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan on the instructions of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The main goal of the forum organized each year to showcase the achievements and accomplishments of the national and world printing industry, is promotion of wide international cooperation in the sphere of book production and printing industry and mutual enrichment of the cultural and historical heritage accumulated over many centuries by different nations. The book fair dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan independence brought together representatives of the leading printing houses and enterprises and companies specializing in the delivery of printing equipment from many countries of the Eurasian continent and the United States.

It should be noted that that scientists and specialists of the world’s leading education research centres, including the publishing departments of the University of California and the Princeton University (US), the Cambridge University and the Oxford University (UK), Ivan Fedorov Moscow State University of Printing Arts and the Moscow State University (Russia), the Ukrainian Academy of Printing took part in the international forum that is held in September marking the beginning of the new academic year. The orientation towards research, education and enlightenment is the distinctive feature of the book fairs organized in Ashgabat testifying to profound attention paid to education and science in the Turkmen state.


Before opening of the IV International Book Fair Book is the Path to Cooperation and Progress Conference, forum participants laid flowers to the Monument of Independence of Turkmenistan.

The cabinet ministers, heads of Mejlis, ministries and sectoral departments, diplomatic missions and international organisations, workers of culture and art, representatives of the public organisations of the Galkynys National Movement, journalists and students attended the forum opening ceremony.

The welcome address of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to forum participants was presented during the opening ceremony. “Book is a pattern of the soul of mankind, a spiritually cultural value able to excite the people’s hearts. The highly artistic literary works – masterpieces become the heritage of the whole humanity”, said the Turkmen leader. Evaluating highly a significant contribution that printing workers had made to widely promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people and the economic achievements of our country, the President of Turkmenistan stated that “mutual cooperation, enhancement of friendly relations in the interests of nations, strengthening of the ties of friendship and brotherhood are the priorities for the Turkmen state.”

Over 35 large state and private enterprises supplied with state-of-the-art printing equipment and specialising in manufacture of a variety of high quality books and printed products meeting international standards presented the tremendous potential of Turkmen publishing industry.

The wonderful new publications presenting the rich spiritual, historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people were displayed in the pavilions of the structural subdivisions of the Turkmen State Publishing Service, including the Publishing Centre, the Turkmenkitap wholesale and retail trading enterprise and the Galkynys Book Centre. Among them are new publications of the research works by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov such as the medical encyclopaedia Medicinal Herbs of Turkmenistan and Turkmenistan – the Land of Healing, The Flight of the Heavenly Horses, Fine and Applied Arts of Turkmenistan, a series of the books Historical and Cultural Monument of Turkmenistan, Fanciful Kugitang, the works by Turkmen classical poets and writers, the wonderful children’s book The White-winged dream of Revival that received the diploma of the VIII CIS International Contest Art of Book in Moscow.

The books The Epoch of New Revival: the Path of Creation to the Happiness of People and To the World with Peace that have recently appeared in print, the brochures, booklets and posters about the fundamental reforms and changes taking place in the country today.

Education and methodological literature in all disciplines of elementary, school and higher education had a special place in the expositions presented by Turkmen printing workers.

The works by the classical authors of Turkmen and oriental literature released on CDs and DVDs, audio books, colourfully illustrated albums and calendars, advertising publications and exclusive printed products composed the expositions presented by the velayat publishing centres and the private enterprises, including Gundogar Yiyldizy, Caphana hyzmatlary, Intek Media, Hatdat, Ezis-Ulke, Garant, Yurtdas, Allegro and others.

The pavilions of foreign exhibition participants were rich in new printing products and high tech pieces of the printing art and their electronic versions, including training and educational content. A diversity of scientific, educational and children's literature, fiction, books on arts and history, visual aids, cartographic products and photo albums was displayed on the stands of the research, educational and publishing centres of the companies from the UK and the US, in the pavilions of the printing enterprises such as Geotar-Media, Medkniga Elbi-Spb, Art-Rodnik, Galart, Vlados, Planeta, Informnauka (Russia), Cartographyya and Mystetstvo (Ukraine), in the book expositions of Belarus, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. Among the unique books presented at the book fair were an encyclopaedic work Turkmen Jewellery published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).

An important part of the exhibition was the Book is the Path to Cooperation and Progress Conference which brought together representatives of the leading publishing circles, higher educational institutions, libraries, printing industry experts, writers and journalists.

The meeting held in the conference hall of the Exhibition Palace provided forum participants an opportunity to learn more about the history and achievements of the printing industry in different countries, advanced technologies applied in manufacturing of book and other printed products and development of the electronic services and book distribution networks. Exchanging views on the prospects of cooperation in these spheres, conference participants discussed the ways to establish close partnerships between the agencies concerned, train specialists of the printing industry and publishing technologies, translation of books and printed products, cooperation between libraries and creative exchange.
